Strange Magic (2015)

Strange Magic (2015) is an animated musical fantasy film produced by Lucasfilm and directed by Gary Rydstrom. The movie is set in a magical forest where two factions—fairies and goblins—are in conflict, and it centers on the themes of love, beauty, and self-worth.

The plot follows Marianne, a fairy princess (voiced by Evan Rachel Wood), who is heartbroken after her fiancé betrays her, and Bog King (voiced by Alan Cumming), a grouchy goblin who despises love. The two characters are forced to work together to retrieve a magical potion, with various other characters, including Marianne’s sister and the mischievous creatures of the forest, contributing to the adventure.

The film is notable for being a jukebox musical, with its soundtrack featuring popular songs from various genres, ranging from the 1960s to the 2000s, such as “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)” and “Burning Down the House.” Despite its visually vibrant animation and catchy tunes, Strange Magic received mixed reviews from critics, with some praising the music and animation but others criticizing the story’s lack of depth and coherence.

Though it didn’t have the same level of impact as other animated films released around the same time, Strange Magic has found a niche audience due to its whimsical world-building and catchy music.
