JOHN CARTER 2 (2024)

JOHN CARTER 2 (2024)With Taylor Kitsch & Lynn Collins

“John Carter” is a 2012 American science fiction action-adventure film directed by Andrew Stanton, with a screenplay co-written by Stanton, Mark Andrews, and Michael Chabon. The film is based on A Princess of Mars, the inaugural novel in Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Barsoom series.

Produced by Jim Morris, Colin Wilson, and Lindsey Collins, it features Taylor Kitsch as the titular John Carter, alongside Lynn Collins, Samantha Morton, Mark Strong, Ciarán Hinds, Dominic West, James Purefoy, and Willem Dafoe. The plot follows John Carter’s first interplanetary journey and his efforts to resolve the civil conflict among the warring kingdoms of Barsoom.

Despite numerous attempts to adapt the Barsoom series since the 1930s, most of which faltered, Walt Disney Pictures made a focused effort to bring Burroughs’ work to the screen in the late 2000s, following a failed attempt in the 1980s. Andrew Stanton, known for his work on Pixar films like Finding Nemo and WALL-E, directed the film as his live-action debut. Filming commenced in November 2009, with principal photography wrapping in July 2010.

The score was composed by Michael Giacchino, who had previously worked on several Pixar films. John Carter was released on March 9, 2012, to coincide with the centennial of the character’s creation and was presented in various 3D formats. The film received mixed reviews, praised for its visual effects, Giacchino’s music, and action sequences, but criticized for its plot and character development. While it underperformed at the North American box office, it set an opening-day record in Russia and grossed $284 million globally.
